Anthropic's Mythos vulnerability discovery tool sparked concerns about an avalanche of new CVEs flooding security teams, but the real risk centers on exposure windows rather than vulnerability volume.

Mythos, revealed in April, uses AI to identify security flaws at scale. Security leaders initially worried that automated discovery would overwhelm triage processes and give attackers a roadmap to exploitation. Those concerns reflect a legitimate problem: too many vulnerabilities, too little time to patch.

But the core issue isn't the number of flaws Mythos finds. It's how long organisations remain exposed between discovery and remediation.

Every vulnerability has a window between public disclosure and patch deployment. For most organisations, that window stretches days or weeks. Mythos accelerates the discovery phase, potentially narrowing the time before flaws become public knowledge. Yet the patch cycle stays constant. Organisations still need time to test fixes, plan deployments, and roll out updates across infrastructure.

Mythos itself didn't break security programs. It simply exposed existing bottlenecks. Organisations that already struggle to patch within 30 days face bigger problems when a single tool can surface thousands of new weaknesses.

The solution isn't fighting the flood of AI-driven vulnerability discovery. The industry should embrace it as a forcing function to modernise patch management. Teams that accelerate their remediation timelines can turn Mythos from a problem into an asset. Those that don't will watch
