n8n has patched a high-severity sandbox escape vulnerability that allows authenticated workflow editors to execute arbitrary operating-system commands with the privileges of the n8n process. The vulnerability affects n8n versions below 2.31.5 and versions 2.32.0 through 2.32.0. The company released fixes in versions 2.31.5 and 2.32.1 to address the issue.

The flaw exploits weaknesses in n8n's expression sandbox, a security boundary designed to isolate user-defined workflow logic from the underlying system. An attacker with workflow editor access can break out of this sandbox and run OS commands directly on the server. This grants the attacker the same system permissions as the n8n process itself, potentially allowing lateral movement, data exfiltration, or system compromise.

The risk applies specifically to authenticated users with workflow editor permissions. Organizations running vulnerable versions should prioritize upgrading immediately. Users without workflow editor roles face no direct risk from this flaw, though compromised editor accounts could endanger entire deployments.
